Fireworks and pyrotechnics - a centuries-old tradition
In Switzerland, fireworks don't make their biggest appearance on New Year's Eve, but on August 1st - the national holiday / federal celebration. However, sky magic is also popular for weddings, birthday parties, company anniversaries and the like.
A few years ago, Swiss citizens were still able to set off category 4 fireworks themselves; this is no longer the case today. Fireworks courses are mandatory to obtain the so-called FWA or FWB permit. Only if you have successfully completed these and adhere to the local regulations can you still set off the popular fireworks.
Since this new regulation, fireworks in this category have played an increasingly important role. This is also where the most development is taking place and it is astonishing: what is now labeled as KAT 3 almost looks like KAT 4 to many people. Of course, this is not the case: there are strict regulations on how much net explosive mass a category 3 firework may have, for example. Many small aspects play a role in the classification, but even these limits are gradually being exhausted. So nothing stands in the way of fireworks fun!
New Year's Eve fireworks vs. August 1st fireworks
As described above, far fewer fireworks are set off on New Year's Eve in this country than on August 1st. There is no difference in fireworks - only the novelty market in Switzerland is geared towards the national holiday. In other countries, this is New Year's Eve, which is not surprising, as the regulations for fireworks are much stricter in Germany, for example. There, fireworks may basically only be set off on New Year's Eve - exemptions can be issued for weddings or other celebrations, for example. But here, too, the possibilities are very limited, which in turn is due to the Explosives Act there. For example, much less net explosive mass is permitted than here in Switzerland and for KAT 3, which is freely available here even during the year, you need training in Germany.
